Wat Phra Mahathat : Ayuthaya

This wat, on the corner of Th Chee Kun and Th Naresuan (Chao Phrom), dates back to the 14th century and was built during the reign of King Ramesuan. Despite extensive damage - not much was left standing after the Burmese hordes had finished - the prang (Khmer-style tower) is still impressive. It was one of the first prangs built in the capital. One of the most photographed sites in Ayuthaya is a Buddha head around which tree roots have grown. Admission is 30B.
